This series of works explores the landscapes of the Wilmore Wilderness, located 2 hours south of Grande Prairie. I Used a photograph a friend took or me a decade ago as basis for the self portrait. I am working in the 19th c. romantic landscape tradition. My work as a former colleague observed my drawings of NW Alberta are an expression of Weltschmerz (from the German, meaning world-pain or world-weariness) It is a term coined by the German author Jean Paul and denotes the kind of feeling experienced by someone who believes that physical reality can never satisfy the demands of the mind. This world view was widespread among several romantic authors such as Byron and Hermann Hesse.
